• For peace throughout the world, that those acting in anger and retribution would experience the mercy of God and so be able to have mercy on others.

• For the city of Boston, that Mayor Michelle Wu and other leaders would have wisdom in enacting fair policies for the good of all.
• For Park Street Church, that Boston would know we are Christ’s disciples because of our love for one another.

The church received word this week that Ginny Viola went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday after a long illness. Ginny joined the staff at Park Street in 1968 as the Woman’s Associate Minister to Students and continued in that role until 1973. For the next ~35 years, she Ginny used here teaching gifts in many ways, including the Community Bible Study, Boston sub parish (which she and her husband Joe hosted for years), Mom’s Day Out (which ran weekly every summer at their home in Newton), as well as in countless mentoring relationships with young women at Park Street. She also forged bridges with churches in the inner city, hosting numerous fundraising events for the benefit of these ministries. She served as an Elder from 2006 to 2009. Ginny was also a key member of Marketplace Network Ministry and helped to steer the Sunday School class by the same name. Her love of working with students never changed over the years, leading her to help establish the partnership between Park Street and IFES in Eurasia and then to join the board of InterVarsity, USA — later becoming chair of that organization before her retirement. Through her life, her infectious enthusiasm for evangelism and her ministry of encouraging others with God’s love and care even in her final days will be a lasting legacy for all who knew and loved her.

Alton Bynum also went to the Lord on Easter Sunday. He was the Director of Choral Music and then Director of Music at Park Street from 1979 until his retirement in 1998. During this time he was also a professor at Gordon College in their music department. Alton also led a small a capella group, called the Christus Choral, which was composed mainly of former students and Park Streeters, and regularly performed at various churches in New England, including Park Street. When Park Street Church had the opportunity to expand its facilities and purchase 2 and 3 Park Street, Alton wrote the first check in support of that project. Those who knew Alton knew that he loved God, Christ, his wife Judith and their children and grand-children, music, and Park Street Church. Those of us who were privileged to work with him will never forget him. Alton’s gentle and patient leadership style was a great asset for the music ministry here and we are grateful for his faithful service to the church. 

We thank the Lord for the legacies of faith that Alton and Ginny have left behind. Please join us in prayer for their families as they grieve.

Please join us for a brunch with Women’s Ministry! Tammy McLeod (Park Street’s Director of College Ministries) will be speaking on the nature of Ambiguous Loss. Ambiguous loss is ubiquitous. What is it that makes it such a stressful kind of loss? How can we be resilient in the midst of it? How can we care for our and others’ souls in ambiguous loss? Come hear one family’s journey into the world of ambiguous loss: a journey that required letting go of what was and learning to live well with what is.

Featuring talks from renowned speakers, J.D. Payne and Shaun Pillay. Park Street’s residential college ministry house has an opening for a male resident starting APR 4 and openings for both men and women starting JUN 1.
